If you make an enemy of a man, catch him out
If you oppose a man, then help him
in a stumble, if his missteps give you the chance.
Recover from a stumble if you can

If a man humiliates you, repay him
When a man first wrongs you, wrong him back
with humiliation, even if his kinship ties are close.
With equal wrong though kin be the bond

And seek accommodation when you can find no stratagem,
Draw near him if you find no other way
and act resolutely when you are certain you will fell him.
Be resolute if you know you’ve gained no ground

Till a day comes when you’re fully empowered
وَقَدand sometimes ألبسI bear with المَولىthe kinsman عَلىdespite ضِغنِrancor صَدرِهِhis breast
وَأُدرَكُand I am overtaken بِالوَغمِby malice الَّذيwhich لاnot أُحاضِرُهْI race against it
And I sometimes bear with my kinsman despite the rancor in his breast,
The Lord has clothed his breast with anger
and am overtaken by malice I do not race against.
And he is seized by grief beyond all reason
وَقَدand indeed يَعلَمُknows المَولىthe kinsman عَلىdespite ذاكَthat أَنَّنيthat I
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle دَعاhe calls عِندَamid الشَدائِدِhardships ناصِرُهْhis defender
And my kinsman well knows, despite that, that I,
The Lord knows well that I when hardships call
when he calls amid hardships, am his defender.
Will be his helper and champion
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأُجزيsurely I repay بِالمَوَدَّةِwith affection أَهلَهاthose worthy of it

And I surely repay with affection those worthy of it,
I’ll repay good will with benevolence
and repay evil with evil, until its digger grows weary of it.
And evil till the evildoer tires of sin
وَأَغضَبُand I grow angry لِلمَولىfor the kinsman فَأَمنَعُso I ward off ضَيمَهُwrong done to him

And I grow angry for my kinsman and protect him from wrong,
I’ll be provoked to rage and block his harm
even if what his innermost thoughts conceal is deceit.
Though evil beings cloak their wicked secrets
وَأَحلَمُand I am forbearing ماas long as لَمnot أَلقَI encounter فيin الحُلمِforbearance ذِلَّةًhumiliation

And I am forbearing so long as I find no humiliation in forbearance,
I’ll show patience but not cowardice
and I have a curb for the meddlesome fool.
And stand against the arrogance of fools

And I am indeed adept at escaping distress, after
I emerge from hardship after being hemmed
its enclosures close in upon some men.
While other men are narrowed by despair

Patiently bearing some undertaking until I accomplish it,
I’ll bear some things until I overcome
silent about the thing I hold in reserve.
Silent about what I intend to conquer
