لَعمَرُكَby your life إِنّيindeed I لِاِبنِtoward the son of زَروانَZarwan إِذwhen عَوىhe howled
لَمُحتَقِرٌsurely contemptuous فيin دَعوَةِa call to الوُدِّfriendship زاهِدُuninterested
By your life, when Ibn Zarwan howled, I
held him in contempt, uninterested in a call to friendship.
وَمالَكَand you have no أَصلٌancestry ياO زِيادُZiyad تَعُدُّهُyou reckon it
وَمالَكَand you have no فيin الأَرضِthe earth العَريضَةِbroad والِدُfather
And you have no ancestry, Ziyad, to claim,
nor any father upon the broad earth.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see عَبدَAbd القَيسِal-Qays مِنكَfrom you تَبَرَّأَتdisavowed
فَلاقَيتَso you encountered ماwhat لَمdid not يَلقَencounter فيamong الناسِpeople واحِدُanyone
Have you not seen Abd al-Qays disown you,
so that you suffered what no one among men had suffered?
وَماand not طاشَwent wide سَهميmy arrow عَنكَaway from you يَومَon the day تَبَرَّأَتdisavowed
لُكيزُLukayz بنُson of أَفصىAfsa مِنكَfrom you وَالجُندُwhile the army حاشِدُwas massed
Nor did my arrow miss you on the day you were disowned
by Lukayz son of Afsa, with the army massed.
وَلاnor غابَhad set قَرنُthe rim of الشَمسِthe sun حَتّىuntil تَحَدَّثَتspoke
بِنَفيِكَof your repudiation سُكانُinhabitants of القُرىthe villages وَالمَساجِدُand the mosques
Nor had the sun's rim set before they spoke
of your disowning—the village-dwellers and the mosques.
فَأَصبَحتَso you became عِلجاًa foreign infidel مَنwhoever يَزُركَvisits you وَمَنand whoever يَزُرvisits
بَناتكَyour daughters يَعلَمknows أَنَّهُنَّthat they are وَلائِدُslave girls
So you became a foreign infidel; whoever visits you or visits
your daughters knows that they are slave girls.
وَأَصبَحنَand they became قُلفاًuncircumcised يَغتَزِلنَthey spin بِأجرَةٍfor wages
حَوالَيكَaround you لَمdid not تَجرَحinflict wounds بِهِنِّon them الحَدائِدthe iron blades
And now, uncircumcised, they spin for wages
around you; no iron blades have wounded them.
نَفَرنَthey recoiled مِنَfrom الموسىthe razor وَأَقرَرنَand acquiesced بِالَّتيin that which
يَقرُّacquiesce عَلَيهاin it المُقرِفاتُbase-born women الكَواسِدُunsaleable
They recoiled from the razor and settled for what
base-born, unsaleable women settle for.
بِإِصطَخَرin Istakhr لَمdid not يَلبَسنَthey wear مِنbecause of طولِthe length of فاقَةٍpoverty
جَديداًanything new وَلاnor تُلقىare laid out لَهُنَّfor them الوَسائِدُthe cushions
In Istakhr, through long poverty, they have worn
nothing new, nor are cushions laid out for them.
وَماand not أَنتَyou بِالمَنسوبِof acknowledged lineage فيamong آلِthe house of عامِرٍAmir
وَلاnor وَلَدَتكَbore you المُحصَناتُchaste women المَواجِدُnoble
Nor are you reckoned among the house of Amir,
nor did chaste, noble women give you birth.
وَلاnor رَبَّبَتكَreared you الحَنظَلِيَّةُthe Hanzali woman إِذwhen غَذَتshe nourished
بَنيهاher sons وَلاnor جِيبَتwere fitted عَلَيكَabout you القَلائِدُthe necklaces
Nor did the Hanzali woman rear you when she fed
her sons, nor were necklaces fitted about you.
وَلكِنbut غَذاكَnourished you المُشرِكونَthe polytheists وَزاحَمَتand crowded against
قَفاكَyour nape وَخَدَّيكَand your cheeks البُظورُthe clitorises العَوارِدُprotruding
But idolaters nourished you, and crowding against
your nape and cheeks were protruding clitorises.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see مِثليone like me زِيادُZiyad بِعِرضِهِover his honor
وَعِرضِكَand your honor يَستَبّانِthe two exchange insults وَالسَيفُwhile the sword شاهِدُis a witness
Never have I seen my like, Ziyad—over his honor
and yours—trade insults with you, while the sword stands witness.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I غَشَّيتُكَI covered you with السَيفَthe sword لَمwould not يَقُلsay
إِذاwhen مُتَّyou died إِلّاexcept ماتَhas died عِلجٌa foreign infidel مُعاهِدُunder covenant
Had I brought the sword down upon you, no one would have said
at your death anything but: 'A foreign infidel under covenant has died.'
