فَإِنّيfor I قَدindeed أَتانيhas reached me مِنsome of نَثاكاreports about you
Ah, who will convey to Sakhr ibn Layla—
for reports of you have indeed reached me—
رِسالَةَa message ناصِحٍa sincere well-wisher لَكَto you مُستَجيبٍresponsive
إِذاwhen لَمdid not تَرعَyou honor حُرمَتَهُhis due رَعاكاhe cared for you
a message from a well-wisher, responsive to you,
who cares for you when you neglect his due;

a devoted kinsman who, if he saw you held in pledge,
being sold one day, would ransom you with his wealth;
يَرىhe sees خَيراًgood fortune إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) نِلتَyou attain خَيراًgood fortune
وَيَشجىand he grieves فيin الأُمورِaffairs بِماat what شَجاكاgrieves you

who sees good fortune whenever you gain good fortune,
and in all matters is grieved by what grieves you.
فَإِنَّكَfor you لاdo not تَرىyou regard أسماءَAsma أَختاًa sister
وَلاnor تَرَيَنَّنيyou shall regard me أَبَداًever أَخاكاyour brother
For you do not regard Asma as a sister,
nor shall you ever regard me as your brother.
فَإِنfor if تُعنَفyou are harsh بِهاwith her أَولاor do not تَصِلهاyou maintain ties with her
فَإِنَّthen indeed لِأُمِّهاher mother has وَلَداًa son سِواكاbesides you
For if you treat her harshly or fail to keep ties with her,
her mother has a son besides you,
يَبَرُّhe is dutiful وَيَستَجيبُand he answers إِذاwhen دَعَتهُshe calls him

and if you defy him over her, he will defy you.
وَكُنتُand I used to أَرىsee بِهاthrough her شَرَفاًhonor وَفَضلاًand preeminence
عَلىover بَعضِsome of الرِجالِthe men وَفَوقَand beyond ذاكاthat
And through her I thought I had honor and preeminence
over some men—and more than that.
جَزانيmay He requite me اللَهُGod مِنكَfrom you وَقَدand already جَزانيHe has requited me

and grant a good outcome to the more truthful of the two disputants,
and assign baseness to whichever of us most deserves it.
فَلاso no وَاللَهِby God لَوif لَمhad not تَعصِyou disobeyed أَمريmy command
لَكُنتَyou would have been بِمَعزِلٍfar removed عَمّاfrom what هُناكاis there
No, by God, had you not disobeyed my command,
you would have been far removed from what is there.
