Indeed, I strove in devotion to you and sought

your approval, hoping from you for what I would not receive.

And I risked my life in places, though others

had greater claim; in devotion to you, I defied my nearest kin.

Keeping faith and holding fast to what was between us,

so that you might reward me with wealth, as I expect you to.

I find that a generous gift from you invariably

falls short of me or lands beyond me.

I find that whenever I hope for a cloud from you

to rain upon me, it turns into a dust storm and blowing sand.

Whenever I say, 'Your sky has showered me,' rightward veer

its downpours, or they swerve left beyond my left side.

And I lowered my bucket among many buckets.

Where, then, are the full buckets? Mine alone remains as it was.

And I do not find a man of loyalty and courage

among the people—a free man content with baseness.

    وَإِن تَنَأ عَنّي تَلقَني عَنكَ نائِيا

    So if you draw near to me, my affection draws near to you;

and if you withdraw from me, you will find me distant from you.

When you honor a man or humiliate him,

and conceal it, know that it is not hidden.

And you place ahead of me one whose judgment falls short,

and one who is not of use to you as I am.

So do not think me heedless of your recompense,

nor forgetful of what was yours that you entrusted to me.
