أردنا سؤالَ الدارِ عَمّن تحمّلوا

فلم نَدرِ مِن فَرطِ البكا كيف نسأَل

We wished to ask the dwelling about those who had departed,

But from so much weeping, we did not know how to ask.

وهاج لنا الذكرى معاهدُ أصبحت

تعيثُ صباً فيها وتعبثُ شمأَلُ

تعيثُ صباً فيها وتعبثُ شمأَلُ

And familiar haunts stirred memories in us, where now

The east wind wreaks havoc and the north wind plays.
