May majesty and honor gladden you, O Bill,

at which the broken heart almost takes flight.

You have acquired thousands despite your indifference, and all of us

are in need of a drop of what you possess.

If this collar equals a crown in value,

then you are worthy of the titles of kings.

    فحيثُ تراهُ فالمقامُ خطيرُ

    And wealth is nothing but a sign of rank among mankind;

so wherever you see it, the standing is high.

And were there a connection between merit and rank,

many thrones and palaces would vanish.

So, O Bill, do not despair: many a crowned one

is like you, except for a pulpit and a throne.

    فمثلُك بين الناطقين كثيرُ

    Nor are you exceptional in your ignorance of the worth of things;

for many among those who speak are like you.

Though eloquent speech has eluded you, as you see,

yet your share of the heart's speech is abundant.

You kept a pledge to a friend, yet neither

Jarwal nor Jarir kept a pledge to a friend.

So live silently, be content with your lot, and rejoice,

for speech is nothing but affliction and evil.

It is delusion for a man to see merit in himself

while his arm falls short in noble deeds.

And a man is nothing but his truthfulness and loyalty,

and beyond that, every great man is small.

And what good does a man's fine eloquence do him

if his conscience cannot speak eloquently?

I praised you, O Bill, because I am a poet,

and you are able to reward handsomely.

And if you knew what I say, you would do for me

what no prince has done for those who praise him.
