فديتكI would ransom you منas جانٍa wrongdoer تجورyou act unjustly وتعتبُand you reproach
ونبذلُand we expend جهداًeffort فيin رضاكَpleasing you وتغضُبُyet you grow angry
I would ransom you, wrongdoer though you are: you wrong and reproach.
I ransom you from the oppression of tyrants,
We strive hard to please you, yet you grow angry.
We strive to please you, yet you show displeasure.
ترىyou see كلevery شيءٍthing حبّةُthe core of قلبهits heart
فتحلوso is sweet لكto you العُتبىappeasement ويحلوand is sweet التجنُّبavoidance
You see the very core of every being's heart,
You see but the hearts' love for you,
So appeasement is sweet to you, and so is avoidance.
So wrongs taste sweet and avoidance is pleasant.
أماis there not بينamong أيدٍhands ضارعاتٍbeseeching مُشفَّعٌan accepted intercessor

Is there no accepted intercessor among beseeching hands,
Between pleading hands and flowing tears,
And no favored one among flowing tears?
Are coaxing and drawing you near.

We knew you enamored of fidelity; why do we
We knew you in youth to be faithful,
See the water of that covenant now running dry?
How is it the water of that pact is now drying up?
قسوتَyou grew harsh وماthough not عهديmy knowledge بقلبكof your heart صخرةٌa rock
فجوهرُكُfor your essence السيَّالُflowing بالرفقto gentleness أنسَبُmore suited
You have grown harsh; I never knew your heart to be a rock.
You were harsh, and I never knew your heart to be rock,
For your flowing essence is better suited to gentleness.
Your essence of flowing kindness more apt.
فرحماكَso have mercy نهرَRiver النيلِNile بالأَنفسِon the souls التيthat

So have mercy, River Nile, on the souls that
Have mercy like the Nile's stream on souls
Perish if you do not rescue them with your mercy.
That without your mercy will perish and rot.

And be gentle with thirst-crazed beasts, their bellies shrunken,
And gentle with livestock, bellies empty,
For whom hunger is grass and destitution is drink.
Their food is grass and scarcity their drink.

Their owner spends the night grieving over their affliction,
Their Lord sleeps grieving their plight,
So he goes hungry as the nights fold away, and laments.
Folding up like the nights, lamenting and weeping.

For ages this wasteland lived as a haven
This wasteland once lived as a meadow,
Of fertility, luxuriating in its varied hues.
Its fertility changing in manifold hues.

It held every lovely sight the eye desired,
It had all the eye desired of elegance and sights,
Exquisite, and all that hearts loved and longed for.
That hearts crave and long to imbue.

Yet calamity's arrow never ceased to strike it,
Yet the arrows of misery kept striking it down,
And calamity's arrow never misses among mortals.
The arrows of misery never miss their mark.

Until it became a wasteland: no fresh green branch
Until it became a wasteland, no flourishing branch
Appears in its abode, nor any fertile meadow.
Waving in melody, or garden to embark.

Tender fingertips once envied its softness,
The moist saplings envied its softness,
But it became like solid rock, or harder still.
Now like deaf stone or harder in its stark.

So stretch out your generous white hand to grant it
So stretch out a hand, white of yours, and provide
The goodness it hopes for and seeks.
All the good it hopes for and humbly does ask.
وليسand there is not لناfor us إلاexcept الدموعtears وسيلةٌa means
إليكto you فإنfor indeed الشبهlike بالشبهto its like يُجذَبُis drawn
And we have no means but tears
We have only tears as our means to you,
To reach you, for like is drawn to like.
For like draws to like, that is the golden clasp.
وقدand indeed كانَthere was فيin فَيضthe flood of المدامِعِtears ناقِعٌa thirst-quencher

And in our flood of tears there could have been relief
There was redemption in the outpouring of tears,
For our burning thirst, had it been sweet like you.
If one like you were doing the castigating rasps.

We have lost you as a nursing infant loses his mother,
We lost you like a child loses its mother,
With no one left to cherish him and care for him.
None left to caress him or rock in their lap.

You were the very soul, now departed from its body;
You were but the soul that left its body,
How could it afterward have any wish to live?
How arid for me now is life in your lapse!

If our scant gratitude has driven you away
If ingratitude banished you from us,
For your blessings—and estrangement is a fine teacher—
And estrangement, a teacher so apt,
فهاso here is يدُناour hand أنthat لاnot نعودَwe shall return رهينةَas a pledge

Here is our hand, pledged that we shall not relapse,
Ever constant in gratitude and its grasp.
And that we shall forever persevere in giving thanks.

Perhaps you thought the earth would drink its fill
With blood in the regions south streaming unsurpassed,
Of blood pouring in the regions of the south.

Indeed, but the free man's soul is too proud
Demeaning and questionable in all that they aspire and grasp.
To stoop to anything that humiliates and defames.

Who, then, would accept a life tainted
By injustice, sustenance with bloodied clasp?
By an unjust livelihood, dyed with blood?

Is there no mercy for people in people's hearts,
A mother suckles them, a father does their unruly brood amass.
While a mother suckles them and a father unites them?
