I battled my days, and they battled me

for an age; I did not flinch, nor did they.

    تصادَمَ الجندلُ بالجندلِ

    Neither their resolve nor mine was weak;

    stone clashed with stone.

They shot, sparing not a single joint,

yet they missed the vital spot.

Would that they had killed me outright! What do I seek

from life with them, if I am not slain?

There is no good in patience through a calamity

the patient sufferer has no hope will lift.

In hardship I endured with the patience of one

led to death who paid no heed.

There is no merit in the patience of one who surrenders,

too helpless to act, and so doing nothing.

    ما أشبه الآخرَ بالأَوّلِ

    For twenty years my condition has not changed;

how like the first is the last!

I go each morning to the factory in a cloak

full of holes, which neither clothes nor covers me.

It betrays my body, just as

abundant, freely flowing tears betrayed my soul.

As though it were an Egyptian woman's face veil,

which hides no face from the beholder.

Worry sways me like a sand dune

between the south wind and the north.

    أجل بكأسِ الحُزنِ لا السّلسَل

    So whoever sees me thinks me drunk;

yes, with the cup of sorrow, not smooth-flowing wine.

I spend my day going to and fro,

as though I were the machine in the factory.

    And the factory owner accepts

nothing from me but crushing, burdensome toil.

If I complain of my paltry wage,

he torments me with insults and shows no kindness.

When at last I return to my home,

I find a wretched life at home.

I see widows complaining of hunger

    to famished, emaciated orphans.

I spend the night with sleepless eyelids,

as though they were tethered to Yadhbul,

among little children sleepless in the dark,

shedding the tears of a bereaved, destitute parent.

Among them, one weak of step, not yet steady,

and one staring in the cradle, not yet a year old.

They call to a mother burning with grief,

dreading a day of bereaving calamity,

and a father helpless to come to their aid

in providing for them, as helpless as an unarmed horseman.

Time's misfortunes have kept assailing me

    with crushing calamity after calamity,

until they struck me with one that left

only remnants of a soul in a bodily frame.

So here I am today, laid low by wasting sickness,

and there is no refuge but patience.

In the scorch of sun-baked ground, I have no protection,

and in the crosswind's gust, I find no warmth.

    This is misery—has any man

suffered it as fully as I have?

O you whose eyes rest content in your days,

live at ease in the fortune coming your way,

and water my barren ground with a single drop

from within that rain cloud pouring down.

And pity little children like sandgrouse chicks,

some lamenting around me, and some wailing.

Be kind to them by keeping me alive, and win

through them the reward of a generous benefactor.

My voice has grown hoarse, and my mind is spent,

and that ill fortune has taken its toll on my tongue.
