    Grief has undone me, and anguish has slain my fortitude;

And sorrow has sundered soul from body.

Time's vicissitudes have made me their target, as archers

Among mankind, they spare no one?

And whenever you seek patience, can you scarcely find it?

That curbed your headlong rush by force, without delay.

A calamity that left lofty glory bowed.

A calamity at which the celestial spheres almost fall from

The reaches of the sky upon the dust and lowlands,

In sorrow for a man who held the allegiance of

    Hopes seeking with him the highest guidance;

In sorrow for the world's adornment and its splendor,

When his radiant full moon fell from on high.

Cheerful of countenance, welcoming those who lodged with him,

Gentle of nature, pure in heart and mind.

Glory collapsed the day its star came crashing down,

Its edifice, pillars, and columns shattered.

Let ignorance rejoice, and let the envious gloat.

O departed one, whose departure none imagined—never did

Your death cross any mind or enter thought.

Who will uphold honor and kindness after you? Who

Will uphold forbearance, piety, goodness, and right guidance?

Who will ascend the pulpits and proclaim the

Upright truth, guiding everyone who wavers?

My life in disarray, until eternity's end.

And I shall pour out my guarded tears in an unbroken stream,

In longing for you, and grief for you that has not faded.

Where you are far from family and children.

Your brother Ahmad to lament his lack of support.

He says, while tears upon his cheeks are strung

Like a necklace, scattered like loose pearls:

My brother, you were my help, through whom I braced

My back; and in my defense you were my surest support.

You answer me after long absence and distance?

No; you are nothing but bones worn away,

Laid waste by that which laid waste to Lubad.

May heaven's rain water you, O his grave, as

Our eyes water you with their scattered tears.

Ah, may God make bountiful the life he has entered, as

His beautiful qualities once flourished in abundance.

And may he dwell in Paradise's garden, in its full bloom,

Immortal beside the One, the Eternal Refuge.
