Can I delight in this world while my lord is angry

with me, and be content with it while my lord is displeased?

If my king is not pleased with me,

then may life bring me no joy, nor any drink taste sweet.

I called upon you, my lord, knowing that I

place my hope in a generous man from whom bounty is sought.

Do you water humankind with rain, leaving no branch withered

in your flourishing reign, nor any garden barren,

while I am denied a drop of those bounties

that would reach my barren homestead and make it flourish?

God forbid that you should be content for me to seek

your favor, only to be disappointed afterward.

And the world, for all its vastness, has closed in on me,

so there is no refuge or escape except to you.

So pardon—may God protect you—the sinner who

called upon a man of power ever inclined to pardon.

    إليكَ بهِ مَولى الورى أتقرَّبُ

    And in the crown prince I have the greatest intercessor;

through him I draw near to you, lord of humankind.

If my lord al-Amaysar is my means of approach,

then no endeavor of mine shall fail, nor any goal prove beyond reach.

May you live on for him as long as you wish, enjoying the finest blessings,

and may his good life be sweet beneath your shade.

And may I always find an open heart in you both,

and may I ever revel in the bounty of you both.

And may my reed pen ever speak the praises of you both,

and I record lofty deeds as they are dictated to me.
