O children of poverty, a fragrant greeting

and praise to you from the children of this world.

May the raincloud water, among your huts,

truth's abode and the cradle of the devout.

You were this world's finest children, and among those

who were happy in it and died happy.

Through your poverty you lived in bliss,

and through scarcity, in a life of ease.

No quarrelling, no contention among you,

no deceit, no hypocrisy, no ostentation.

A virtuous character and a pure heart,

    like a cup of wine in essence and clarity;

and loyalty through which love grew firm—

loyalty is love's constancy among people.

Your story has become a lesson

to humankind and solace for the wretched.

In it the beholder discerns wisdom

never inscribed by the sages' reed pen.

Wisdom you never read in its books,

but you perused the pages of the open expanse.

And the book of the universe contains pages

in which the wise read wisdom.

    A person's life in solitude

is the best life, assuring the finest happiness.

For humankind is evil and endless worry,

and misery no other misery can match:

a poor man envious of wealth,

    and a rich man who abases the poor;

and a strong man oppressing the weak,

and a weak man suffering at the strong man's hands.

In earth's open spaces lies a refuge from them,

    and deliverance from them—what deliverance!

For living among them is humiliation,

and a life of humiliation is the same as death.

Would that Virginie had obeyed Paul,

and granted him his wish that she stay,

and pitied the tears that flowed

from eyes that had never known how to weep.

even for an hour; but it was fate's decree.

    She left him, not knowing

that the day of reunion would be the day of meeting.

What had Virginie to do with Paris? Was there not

in the wilderness enough to dispense with the world?

This wealth is a cup in which

a drop of red wine is mingled with blood.

No one drinks a draught of it

that does not harbor an incurable disease.

    They offered her dazzling glory,

bewildering minds with beauty and splendor.

    its alluring pleasure and wealth.

the goodness and happiness it held.

on longing's wing, urged onward by hope.

while behind it all is God's decree in the universe.

Why has this sky grown dark,

warning people of woe and calamity?

Why has this sea grown turbulent,

like a towering building upon a building?

And the ship amid its waves seems

a feather borne by the hand of the wind.

in prayer, when prayer can no longer avail.

Such is the world, and this the end

of every living soul; none lives forever.
