An arrival—but I do not call it happy.

And a reign that, however long it lasts, will perish.

    وعدتَ وحُزنٌ في الفُؤادِ شديدُ

    You went away, and the people's mouths smiled with joy;

And you returned, with deep sorrow in the heart.

You pass us by: not an eye looks toward you,

Nor is any heart among those hearts affectionate.

Why the congratulations? Are there noble deeds

To gladden us, or any praiseworthy endeavor of yours?

If you have no power to command, why the processions?

And if you have no power to forbid, why the soldiers?

The sight of you recalls to us days when there were sent down

Upon us dark calamities from your forefathers.

Macedonia hurled you at us, and we were struck

By a well-aimed arrow, unerring in calamity.

Then, when you took power, you tyrannized—and so it is

When the Turk becomes a chief.

How much innocent blood of ours was shed!

And how many graves enclosed that blood!

And how often the sea's belly enfolded countless torn limbs,

For which entrails and livers are torn apart!

And how often the country's unity was shattered,

And a lofty palace in the land fell to ruin!

And a great man from among our people was led away, shackled,

His tread heavy beneath the weight of chains.

So no newcomer among you upheld justice,

Nor did any forebear among you walk in rectitude.

It is as though I see the royal palace fallen to ruin

    Through oppression—and blatant oppression destroys.

    له عندَ ترديدِ الرثاءِ نشيدُ

    And the owl laments among its ruins, hooting;

It has a chant when it repeats its elegy.

O Abbas, do you hope to become a caliph,

As fathers wished and forefathers sought?

Oh, would that our world would vanish, and that we

Might be in the earth's belly when you reign!

O Abbas, do not grieve over the reign: it

Has ended, and this grief does no good.

O Abbas, sovereignty has passed into the hand of a just ruler,

Who wards off death from his pool and drives it back.

    And Time's eyelid had been drowsy, asleep;

And behold, today it has awakened from slumber.

Britain, may your command ever hold sway,

And your shadow stretch far throughout Egypt,

So that affairs as a whole may be put in order,

And oppression be driven from them, an outcast.

Would a wolf dare trample with its foot

A den, while lions are in that den?

    فأضحى بفضلِ العدلِ وهوَ جديدُ

    For you occupied the land when the land lay in ruins;

Then, by the grace of justice, it became new.

Whenever I see the flags, their shadow fluttering

On the soil of Egypt, I am indeed happy.
