I am reproached for my gratitude to the designated successor, Abu al-Hasan,

and that, to me, is among the wonders of this age:

successor to the best of men, and the first who

aided the Messenger of God in secret and openly.

And but for him, no rule would have been credited to Hashim,

and the clan would have been disgraced and humiliated through the ages.

So he appointed the sons of al-Abbas, singling out no others—

and who is worthier than he to show generosity and bestow favors?

So Abd Allah made guidance clear in Basra,

and Ubayd Allah poured forth generosity upon Yemen.

And he apportioned the offices of the caliphate among them,

so may I never cease to be bound to this gratitude, held in pledge.
