The companions in whom we trusted have departed.

They departed, yet your heart is mad for them, clinging to them.

She grants only a scant amount, apprehensive,

as a fearful man dreads the touch of a snake.

O Umm Imran, it neither ceased nor went away—

this yearning within me—until anxiety wore me thin.

May God never free me from bondage to longing for you.

What harm has it done me to be lovesick for you and restless?

    لا قَضَمٌ في ثَناياهُ وَلا رَوَقُ

    You smiled, revealing a mouth with fine-pointed canines and finely serrated teeth;

its incisors have neither chips nor protrusion.

My heart yearns for you, that it may meet you,

as a drowning man yearns for his deliverance.
