لَقَدindeed أَرسَلَتshe sent فيin السِرِّsecret لَيلىLayla تَلومُنيshe reproaches me
وَتَزعُمُنيand she claims I am ذاpossessing مَلَّةٍboredom طَرِفاًfickle جَلداtough
Layla has indeed sent word in secret, reproaching me,
Leila, in secret, sends messengers to blame me
and claims I am easily bored, fickle, and tough.
Claiming I'm fickle and unfaithful
وَقَدand indeed أَخلفَتناshe failed us كُلَّall ماwhat وَعَدَتshe promised بِهِregarding it
وَوَاللَهand by God ماnot أَخلَفتُهاI failed her عامِداًdeliberately وَعداa promise
Yet she has broken every promise she made us,
Yet she has broken every promise between us
and, by God, I have never deliberately broken a promise to her.
While, by God, I have not willfully betrayed our word
فَقُلتُso I said مُجيباًin reply لِلرَسولِto the messenger الَّذيwho أَتىcame
تَراهُdo you think it لَكَto you الوَيلاتُwoes مِنfrom قَولِهاher words جِدّاin earnest
So I said in reply to the messenger who came:
So I told the messenger when he came:
Do you think—woe to you—that she means her words in earnest?
"Her words bode only ill for you"
إِذاwhen جِئتَهاyou reach her فاقرَthen convey السَلامَgreetings وَقُلand say لَهاto her
دَعيabandon الجَورَinjustice لَيلىLayla واِسلُكيand follow مَنهَجاًa path قَصداstraight
When you reach her, convey greetings and tell her:
"Greet her, and say: Leave off injustice, Leila
Abandon injustice, Layla, and follow a straight path.
And walk the straight path of equity"
أَفيis it because of مُكثِناour staying عَنكُمaway from you لَيالٍnights مَرِضتُهاI was ill during them
تَزيدينَنيyou add to me لَيلىLayla عَلىon top of مَرَضيmy illness جَهداhardship
Is it because we stayed away from you for nights when I was ill
"Does my absence cause you sickness, nights on end?
that you add hardship to my illness, Layla?
Yet you only add, Leila, to my own weary load"
تَعُدِّينَyou count ذَنباًan offense واحِداًone ماnot جَنَيتُهُI committed it
عَليَّagainst me وَماand not أُحصيI enumerate ذُنوبَكُمُyour offenses عَدّاby counting
You hold a single offense—one I did not commit—
"You count a single sin I never committed
against me, while I cannot count your offenses.
While your own cannot be numbered"
فَإِنso if شِئتِyou wish حَرَّمتُI shall forbid myself النِساءَwomen سِواكُمُother than you
وَإِنand if شِئتِyou wish لَمnot أُطعَمI am given a taste
If you wish, I shall forbid myself all women except you.
"If you wish, I shall swear off all women but you
And if you wish, I shall have no taste of pure water or sleep.
If you wish, I shall not taste broth or bread"
وَإِنand if شِئتِyou wish غُرناwe shall descend to the lowlands بَعدَكمُafter you ثُمَّthen لَمnot نَزَلwe cease to be
بِمَكَّةَin Mecca حَتّىuntil تَجلسيyou go upland قابِلاًnext year نَجداNajd
And if you wish, we shall descend to the lowlands after you, then stay
"And if you wish, we shall leave after you
in Mecca until you go up to Najd next year.
Not stopping in Mecca until we meet again in Nejd"
