ماwhat ضَرَّكُمharmed you لَوif قُلتُمُyou said سَدَداًrightly
إِنَّindeed المَنيَّةَdeath عاجِلٌimminent غَدُهاher morrow
What harm would it have done you to speak aright?
Indeed, death’s morrow is close at hand.
وَلَهاand to her عَلَيناupon us نِعمَةٌa kindness سَلَفَتcame before
لَسناwe are not عَلىthroughout الأَيامِthe days نَجحَدُهاdenying it
And she has bestowed a kindness upon us before;
we do not deny it as the days pass.
لَوif تَمَّمَتshe completed أَسبابَthe means of نِعمَتِهاher favor
تَمَّتbecame complete بِذَلِكَthrough that عِندَناwith us يَدُهاher bounty
Were she to perfect the means of her favor,
her bounty toward us would thereby be complete.
إِنّيindeed I وَإِيّاهاand her كَمُفتَتِنlike one enthralled
بِالنارِby fire تُحرِقُهُit burns him وَيَعبُدُهاand he worships it
Truly, with her I am like one enthralled
by fire: it burns him, yet he worships it.
