The dwellings are effaced; no people remain

On their rugged uplands or their soft, level ground.

The obliterating winds scatter whatever is light for them,

And heavy rain has swept away their hard ground's soil.

I swear by what they slaughtered on Mina's morning,

Beside the stoning sites, their hobbles weighing them down,

And by the sacrificial camels, when driven to their slaughtering ground,

White, their pious offering made lawful by release—

Even if the site of their dwellings were turned

Upside down, its underside rising above,

I would surely know their site by what

My ribs once harbored for their people,

And the maiden's sitting places that stand revealed,

And landmarks, with no confusion between them,

And the horses' tethering places, worn away,

Like tethering-loops made firm by twisting,

And fixed hearthstones, scorched as they stood upright:

So you see them paired, with gaps between.

One who knows them well almost recognizes them,

But desertion and drought turn him back.

O dwelling of Bishra, even if you have faded with decay,

And a herd of wild cattle has grazed you after shy maidens,

Yet how often I saw you—everything new comes to decay—

    Inhabited, when union bound us,

In days when we defied whoever carried tales of you, falsely

    Or truthfully, and the cord was loosened;

In days when Bishra was like an oryx cow, led astray

By a young calf, soft of voice.
