مَنwhoever كانَhas been يَسأَلُasking عَنّاabout us أَينَwhere مَنزِلُناour home
فَالأُقحُوانَةُthen al-Uqhuwanah مِنّاfor us مَنزِلٌa home قَمَنُfitting
Whoever has been asking about us—where our home is—
al-Uqhuwanah is a fitting home for us,
إِذwhen نَلبَسُwe wear العَيشَlife صَفواًpure ماnot يُكَدِّرُهُclouds it
طَعنُthe barbs الوشاةِof the slanderers وَلاand not يَنبوdeals harshly بِناwith us الزَمَنُtime
when we wore life in its purity, unclouded by
the slanderers’ barbs, and time did not deal harshly with us.
لَيتَwould that الهَوىlove لَمhad not يُقَرِّبنيbrought me close إِلَيكِto you (feminine) وَلَمand had not
أَعرِفكِI knew you (feminine) إِذsince كانَwas حَظّيmy share مِنكُمُfrom you (plural) الحَزَنُsorrow
Would that love had not drawn me close to you, nor had I
known you, since my share from you was sorrow.
مَنwhoever كانَwas ذاpossessed of سَكَنٍa home بِالشّامِin Syria يَأَلَفُهُcherishes it
فَإِنَّthen indeed فيin غَيرِهِother than it أَمسىhas come to be ليَfor me السَكَنُthe home
If anyone has a home in Syria that he cherishes,
then my own home has now come to be elsewhere.
وَإِنَّand indeed ذاDhu (possessor of) القَصرِal-Qasr (the palace) حَيٌّa settlement ماnot بِهِin it وَطَنيmy homeland
لَكِنbut بِمكَّةَin Mecca أَمسىhas come to be الأَهلُthe kin والوَطَنُand the homeland
And Dhu al-Qasr is a settlement, but my homeland is not there;
rather, my kin and homeland now lie in Mecca.
إِذاwhen الحِجازُthe Hijaz خَوىis empty مِمَّنof those who نُسَرُّwe rejoice بِهِin his company
والحاجُand the camel-thorn داجٍdark بِهِin it مُغرَورِقٌdrenched ثُكَنُclusters
When the Hijaz is empty of those whose company delights us,
and the camel-thorn stands there in dark, drenched clumps.
