إِذا ذُكِرَ الحُطَيئَةُ لَم يَعُدّوا

إِذا ذُكِرَ الحُطَيئَةُ لَم يَعُدّوا

حَديثاً عِندَ ذاكَ وَلا قَديما

حَديثاً عِندَ ذاكَ وَلا قَديما

Whenever al-Hutay'a is mentioned, they do not recount

When Huteiyah is mentioned, they speak

anything recent then, nor anything of old.

No more of new or ancient lore;

وَما كانَ الحُطَيئَةُ غَيرَ كَلبٍ

وَما كانَ الحُطَيئَةُ غَيرَ كَلبٍ

رَماهُ اللَهُ أَن نَبَحَ النُجوما

رَماهُ اللَهُ أَن نَبَحَ النُجوما

And al-Hutay'a was nothing but a dog;

For Huteiyah was but a dog

God struck him for barking at the stars.

Whom Allah forbade to bark at stars.
