أَلَمdid … not تَعلَميyou (feminine) know ياO أُمَّmother of عَمرَةَ‘Amrah أَنَّنيthat I
أَلَم تَعلَمي يا أُمَّ عَمرَةَ أَنَّني
تَخاطَأَنيpassed me by رَيبُcalamities of الزَمانِtime لِأَكبَراso that I might grow old
تَخاطَأَني رَيبُ الزَمانِ لِأَكبَرا
Did you not know, O Umm ‘Amrah, that I
Did you not know, O mother of Amrah, that I
have been spared time’s calamities, so that I might grow old?
Was wronged by the vicissitudes of time when I grew old,
وَأَشهَدُand I see مِنfrom عَوفٍ‘Awf حُلولاًencamped bands كَثيرَةًmany
وَأَشهَدُ مِن عَوفٍ حُلولاً كَثيرَةً
يَحُجّونَmake pilgrimage to سَبَّthe turban of الزَبرَقانِal-Zibriqan المُزَعفَراsaffron-dyed
يَحُجّونَ سَبَّ الزَبرَقانِ المُزَعفَرا
And I see many encamped bands of ‘Awf,
And I saw many pilgrims from Awif
who make pilgrimage to al-Zibriqan’s saffron-dyed turban.
Circumambulating the honorable, glorious Kaaba.
تَمَنّىwished حُصَينٌHusayn أَنto يَسودَbe master of جِذاعَهُhis young men
تَمَنّى حُصَينٌ أَن يَسودَ جِذاعَهُ
فَأَمسىso he became حُصَينٌHusayn قَدindeed أَذَلَّbecame abased وَأَقهَراand was overpowered
فَأَمسى حُصَينٌ قَد أَذَلَّ وَأَقهَرا
Husayn wished to be master of his young men,
Husain wished that he would master his tribe,
so Husayn ended up abased and overpowered.
Yet Husain was humbled and overpowered.
وَهُمand they أَهِلاتٌclans حَولَaround قَيسِQays بنِson of عاصِمٍ‘Asim
وَهُم أَهِلاتٌ حَولَ قَيسِ بنِ عاصِمٍ
إِذاwhen أَدلَجواset out early at night بِاللَيلِby night يَدعونَthey call upon كَوثَراKawthar, the bountiful one
إِذا أَدلَجوا بِاللَيلِ يَدعونَ كَوثَرا
And they are clans around Qays ibn ‘Asim;
And they were women of Qais ibn Aasim
when they set out at night, they call upon Kawthar, the bountiful one.
Who prayed through the night invoking abundant good.
