And many a shy woman, her veil’s folds fallen loose,
With cheeks unveiled and tresses flowing,
On an unsaddled camel’s back, its saddlecloths having slipped off,
Upon a lofty camel mounting slow,

Braces both hands against the hump, having seen
Her hands she binds, for fear her veil should fall,
Marked cavalry, its squadrons rallying to it.
And fills with anxious dread her timid soul.

We dismounted and gave the armored warriors its blood to drink—
We charged; their camels' life-blood flowed amain;
Buckets of death, where death’s buckets are served.
Where death and carnage strewed the ensanguined plain.
