عَلى أَنَّهُ ما كانَ فَهوَ شَديدُ
In my heart is an ailment I cannot describe well.
My aching heart I cannot well describe
In my heart is a malady I cannot well describe,
Yet whatever it may be, it is severe.
Though fierce it was, and yet more fierce doth bide
Save that, whatever it is, it is severe.
تمرّpass بهby it الأَيّامthe days تسحبdragging ذيلهاtheir train

فَتبلى بِهِ الأَيامُ وَهوَ جَديد
The days pass by it, dragging their train.
The days glide by, dragging their skirts along
The days pass over it, dragging their trailing robes,
So the days wear out with it, while it remains new.
And bare their passage, but itself doth 'bide
And the days wear out, while it remains new.
