إِنif يأَخذِtakes اللَهGod مِنfrom عَينيَّmy two eyes نورهماtheir light
إِن يأَخذِ اللَه مِن عَينيَّ نورهما
فَفيthen in لِسانيmy tongue وَقَلبيand my heart منهماfrom the two of them نورُlight
فَفي لِساني وَقَلبي منهما نورُ
If God takes from my eyes their light,
If God takes the light from my eyes
If God has taken the light from my eyes,
then in my tongue and heart there is light from them.
In my tongue and heart there is still light
Then in my tongue and my heart, a light remains.
قَلبيmy heart ذَكيkeen وَعَقليand my mind غَيرُnot ذيpossessing دَخَلtaint
قَلبي ذَكي وَعَقلي غَيرُ ذي دَخَل

وَفي فَمي صارِم كالسَيف مَأثور
My heart is keen, and my mind is free of taint,
My heart is smart, my mind unblemished
My heart is keen, my mind free of defect,
and in my mouth is a keen, patterned blade, like a sword.
And in my mouth, a sharp sword, well-known
And in my mouth is a sharp blade, like a drawn sword.
