إِذاwhen التَقَيناwe meet عَمّنabout whoever يحيّينيgreets me
I listen to my guide so he may tell me,
I listen to my guide to tell me
I listen closely to my guide so he may inform me,
when we meet, who is greeting me.
When we meet, who will greet me
When we meet others, of those who send me greetings.
أُريدُI wish أَنto أَعدِلapportion fairly السَلامthe greeting وَأَنand to

I wish to apportion greetings fairly, and to
I want to exchange peace and to
I desire to return the salutation with due measure,
distinguish between the noble and the lowly.
Distinguish the noble from the low
And to distinguish between the noble and the base.
أَسمَعI hear ماwhat لاnot أَرىI see فَأكرَهso I am loath أَنto

I hear what I do not see, and am loath to
I hear what I cannot see, so I dislike
I hear what I do not see, and I dread to
err, for hearing is not trustworthy.
To err, for hearing is unsure
Commit an error, for hearing is untrustworthy.
لِلَّهto God; expressing admiration عَينيmy eye الَّتيwhich فُجعتI was bereft بِهاof it
لَوif only أَنَّthat دَهراtime بِهاwith it يواتينيwould favor me
God bless my eye, of which I was bereft—
To God my eyes with which I was pained
To God I mourn the eyes I have been bereft of,
if only time would favor me with it!
If only an era would bring them back to me
If only time would favor me with them once more.
لَوif كُنتI had been خُيّرتgiven a choice ماnot أَخَذتُI would have accepted بِهاin exchange for it

Had I been given a choice, I would not have accepted in exchange for it
If I were given a choice I would not take
Had I been given the choice, I would not have accepted in exchange for them
Noah’s long life amid Qarun’s wealth.
Noah's life in Qarun's kingdom
The longevity of Noah within the kingdom of Qarun.

It is my dear friends’ duty to visit me,
It is my brothers' right to return to me
It is the duty of my close friends to visit me,
and offer condolences for my loss and weep for me.
And to console me and weep for me
To offer solace for my plight and weep for my sake.
