أَلَمhave ... not? تَرَنيyou seen me صَبِرتُI bore patiently عَلىover خَريمٍKharim
وَكانَand was فِداؤُهُhis ransom أَهليmy family وَماليand my wealth
Have you not seen me bear Kharim's loss patiently?
Did you not see me be patient with an infirm old man
Do you not see how I patiently endured the loss of Kharim,
Though my family and wealth would have been his ransom.
Whose ransom was my family and wealth?
Even though my family and my wealth would have been his ransom?
وَلوَand if أَنّيthat I شللتI became paralyzed مِنin يَمينيmy right hand
لأفردتI would have separated اليَمينthe right hand عَنfrom الشِمالthe left hand
And had I been paralyzed in my right hand,
And had my right hand been paralyzed
And even if my right hand were to wither,
I would have separated the right hand from the left.
I would have isolated it from the left
Leaving the right severed from the left,
وَلَكِنّيbut I صبرتI bore patiently عليهِover him إِنّيindeed I
رأيتI found الصَبرpatience أَحجىmore fitting بِالرِجالfor men
But I bore his loss patiently, for I
But I was patient with him, for I
Yet I bore his loss with patience, for indeed I
Found patience more fitting for men.
Saw patience as the mark of great men
Deemed patience the most worthy trait for men.
فَتىa youth حازَattained المَكارِمnoble virtues وَهوَwhile he was طفلa child
وَأورىand struck fire from يافِعاًas an adolescent زندthe firestick المَعاليlofty deeds
A youth who attained noble virtues while still a child,
A young man who attained glory as a child
A young man who possessed noble virtues while merely a child,
And as an adolescent struck fire from the firestick of lofty deeds.
And showed manliness while still a youth
And struck the flint of high glory while still an adolescent,
وَشادَand built لِقَومِهِfor his people مَجداًglory سَيَبقىwill endure
بَقاءَthe endurance of الراسِياتthe firmly rooted ones مِنamong الجِبالthe mountains
And built for his people a glory that will endure
He brought glory to his people, glory that will last
And built for his people a glory that will remain,
As long as the firmly rooted mountains endure.
As long as the firm mountains stand
Lasting as long as the firmly anchored mountains.
وَكانَand he was لَناfor us الخَليفَةَthe successor مِنin place of أَبيهِhis father
لِيَنهَضto contend بالملمّاتwith calamities الثِقالِweighty
And for us he was his father's successor,
And he was for us a successor to his father
He was for us the true successor of his father,
To contend with weighty calamities.
To undertake with strong resolve this heavy task
Rising to shoulder the heavy burdens of calamity.
فَلاso may ... not تبعَدyou be far away فكلّfor every فَتىyouth أُناسٍa people
سَيفجعهمwill bereave them بِهِof him صَرفَthe vicissitudes of اللَياليthe nights
So may you not be far away; for every youth a people has,
So do not despair, for every man of character
So may you not be cast far from mercy, for every tribe's youth
The vicissitudes of the nights will bereave them of him.
Will grieve them when the nights go by
Shall be taken from them by the turning of the nights.
فَإِنso if تَكُyou are للبِلىto decay أَمسَيتَyou have become رَهناًa hostage
فَقَدthen indeed أَبقَيتَyou have left behind مَجداًglory غَيرَnot بالِdecaying
So if you have become a hostage to decay,
And if you are destined for ruin, you will remain
For if you have now become a hostage to decay,
You have indeed left behind a glory that does not decay.
A glory that does not disappear or fade
You have surely left behind a glory that shall never fade.
