O reproacher, how many a precious thing I have lost,

and many a person dear to me has departed.

And I have endured the trials of time and distress,

and a dear one among my close kin has bade me farewell.

So I consoled myself; yet, over Ahmad,

my dear son, I am bereft of solace and ailing.

I see patience in his absence as a hidden ember,

whose flame in the heart never departs.

    له كرب ما تَنجَلي وَغُموم

    And the outline of his image keeps visiting my bed;

with it come anguish that never lifts, and sorrows.

And his traces in the house, wherever I am led

by my eye, are sorrow abiding in my heart.

Whenever I seek patience over his loss, hoping for its reward,

a heart mad with love for its dear one refuses patience.

By your life, on the day I bury my lifeblood

and return from him patiently, I am choked with grief.

And my heart since his loss is indeed stricken,

and my tears since his loss keep welling forth.

    إِلى الحَشر فيهِ وَالنُشور مُقيم

    I marked out for him in the dust an abiding home;

in it he dwells until the Gathering and Resurrection.

    وَأَيّ سُرور في الحَياة يَدومُ

    And he was a joy that did not last for me, and a delight;

and what joy in life endures?

And he was solace and sweet basil; before I could breathe its scent, there came

from time a day made terrible by parting.

Just when I had spent my youth, and my steps were shortened

by the shackles of gray hair whenever I rise,

and I had left life's sweetness behind, save for a scant remnant

over which the calamities of misfortune hover,

I was bereaved of half my soul; grief and love

are, by my life, a painful torment in life.

Behold, all life after parting from Ahmad

and every joy, as long as I live, are hateful.

The untroubled fault me for my yearning

and my grief; everyone, my dear son, blames me.

Was the prophet Jacob, then, for his grief

blameworthy? No wise man casts scorn on me.

Grief seared his heart, as though its blaze

were the blazing of fires with a fierce flame.

    أَبى ذاك ربّ العالَمين رَحيم

    So God did not reproach the prophet for his grief;

the merciful Lord of all worlds refused that.

So were it not for the hope of reward through you—and indeed it

is a great recompense, though the affliction is grievous—

and for your being a beneficial offering before God

and a great portion for us on the Day of Reckoning,

I would redouble my grief, my dear son, and soon

the mourning women would stand over me, wailing.
