How fine jealousy is at its proper time,
How excellent is protective jealousy in its proper time,
and how ugly jealousy is when constant!
And how repugnant is jealousy at every turn.

Whoever never ceases to suspect his wife,
He who ceases not to accuse his wife,
battling the doubts of suspicion concerning her,
Besieging her with the doubts of suspicion,

Is on the verge of inciting her to the very deed
he fears will expose her to others' eyes.
He fears will expose her to the eyes of men.

To keep her chaste, it is enough to place her
It suffices for her protection that you entrust her
beside your own unblemished honor and faith.
To your own sound honor and religious conscience.

Let her discover nothing suspicious in you,
Let her not witness any impropriety from you,
lest the tethered one follow its companion's rope.
Lest the partner follows the path of their companion.
