أَقلّيlessen عَليَّupon me اللَومَthe blame ياO أُمَّmother of مالِكMalik
فَلَمfor ... not يُؤتَbe granted منthrough حرصeagerness عَلىfor المالwealth طالِبُهits seeker
Lessen your blame of me, O Umm Malik.
For no seeker is granted wealth merely through eagerness for it.
فَواللَهِfor, by God ماnot قصّرتُI fell short فيin وَجهan avenue مطلبpursuit
أَرىI see أَنَّthat فيهِin it مَطلباًsomething to seek فأُطالِبُهso I pursue it
By God, I have not fallen short in any avenue of pursuit
where I see something worth seeking, and so pursue it.
وَلَكِنbut لِهَذاfor this الرِزقَprovision وَقتٌa time مُوقتٌappointed

Yet this provision has an appointed time;
its Giver apportions it among all creatures.

And long reflection has kept me awake, for I
have marveled at a matter whose wonders never end:
أَرىI see فاجِراًa wicked man يُعىunclear; apparently 'is called' جَليداًstalwart لظلمهfor his injustice
وَلَوand if كُلّفwere tasked with التَقوىpiety لكلّتwould grow blunt مَضاربهhis blades
I see a wicked man [called] stalwart for his injustice,
yet if tasked with piety, his blades would grow blunt;
وَعفّاand a chaste man يُسمّىis called عاجِزاًincapable لِعفافهfor his chastity
وَلَولاand were it not for التَقىpiety ماnot أَعجزتهdefeated him مَذاهِبُهhis pursuits
and a chaste man called incapable for his chastity,
though but for piety, his pursuits would not have defeated him;

and a fool, favored in his affairs,
whom his friends and relatives make their chief,

وَلاnor نائلٍbounty جزلlavish تُعدّare counted مَواهبهhis gifts
with fine judgment in affairs, but no piety,
nor lavish bounty whose gifts can be counted.
فَلَيسَfor it is not لعجزbecause of incapacity المرءa person أَخطأهeluded him الغِنىwealth
وَلاnor باحتيالٍthrough scheming أدركacquired المالَwealth كاسبهits earner
It is not because a man is incapable that wealth eludes him,
nor through scheming does its earner acquire wealth;
وَلَكِنَّهbut it is قبضُwithholding الإِلهGod وَبسطهand His bestowal
فمنthen who ذاthe one يُجاريهcan rival Him ومنand who ذاthe one يُغالبهcan overcome Him
rather, it is God's withholding and bestowing.
Who, then, can rival Him, and who can overcome Him?
هَلis ...? الدهرTime إِلّاexcept صَرفُهits reversals وَنَوائِبُهand its calamities
وَسرّاءُand the joys of عيشlife زائِلٍfleeting وَمَصائِبُهand its afflictions
Is Time anything but its reversals and calamities,
and the joys of fleeting life and its afflictions?

A man says, 'I have increased my wealth,' but it is only
for his heir that its earner makes the wealth grow.
يُحاسِبcalls to account فيهِover it نفسهhimself عَنconcerning حَياتِهِhis life
وَيتركهand leaves it نَهباًas plunder لمنfor someone لاnot يُحاسِبهhe calls him to account
He calls himself to account over it throughout his life,
then leaves it as plunder for someone he does not call to account.
فكِلهُso eat it وَأَطعِمهand feed others with it وَخالسهand snatch it away وارِثاًan heir

شَحيحاًmiserly وَدَهراًand Time تَعتَريكَbeset you نَوائبهits calamities
So eat of it, feed others with it, and snatch it away from an heir
who is miserly—and from Time, whose calamities beset you.
أَرىI see المالwealth وَالإِنسانand humankind للدهرfor Time نهبةًplunder
فَلاso neither البخلmiserliness مبقيهِpreserves it وَلاnor الجودgenerosity خاربهdestroys it
I see wealth and humankind as plunder for Time;
neither miserliness preserves it nor generosity destroys it.
لكلfor every امرىءperson رزقprovision وَللرزقand for provision جالِبٌa bringer
وَلَيسَand does not يَفوتelude المَرءَa person ماwhat خَطّwrote كاتبهhis scribe
Every person has provision, and provision has a bringer;
and no man misses what his scribe has written.
يَخيبُis disappointed الفَتىthe young man منfrom حَيثُwhere يَرزقprovides for غيرهsomeone other than him
وَيُعطىand is given الفَتىthe young man منfrom حَيثُwhere يحرمis denied صاحبهhis companion
A man meets disappointment where another receives provision,
and a man receives where his companion is denied.

وَيُحرمand is denied هَذاthis man الرِزقَprovision وَهوَwhile he يُغالِبهstruggles for it
Provision is brought to this man while he rests at ease,
and this one is denied provision while struggling for it.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you لاnot تَدريknow أَرزقُكis your provision ...? فيin الَّذيthat which

And indeed you do not know whether your provision lies in what
you pursue, or in what you do not pursue.

Overlook the sins of your nearest kin, for indeed
every close friend has a rider who rides him.

with aid on a day whose stars are not hidden.

You see him in the morning while you are safe, and shield yourself
with his brow on battle's day against whoever fights him.

Every person has friends in hardship and prosperity,
and the greatest of them in calamities are his relatives.

And I surely pity the noble man when he goes
in hope to a base man, making his request;

and I pity him for standing at his door,
as I pity a fine steed with a boor riding it.
