وبشِّرنيand give me glad tidings بإتمامof the completion of الأمورِthe matters
Your letter was the beginning of joy,
Your book was the key to happiness
And give me glad tidings of matters fulfilled.
And gave me good news of things to come
كأنيas though I كنتhad been مأسوراًa captive أتاهُcame to him
بفكِّfor release from الأسرcaptivity توقيعُthe decree of الأميرِthe emir
As though I had been a captive to whom there came
As if I was a prisoner, freed
The emir's decree of release from captivity.
By the prince's signature releasing bonds
وقلبيand my heart كانwas أعمىblind عنto هُداهits guidance
فأبصرso it gained sight بالكتابthrough the letter المستنيرِradiant
And my heart was blind to its guidance,
My heart was blind to its guidance
Then gained sight through the radiant letter,
Yet with your book I saw the light
كيعقوبlike Jacob النبيِّthe prophet جَلاdispelled عَماهُhis blindness
موافاةُthe arrival of القميصthe shirt معwith البشيرِthe bearer of glad tidings
Like the prophet Jacob, whose blindness was dispelled
Like the prophet Jacob when his blindness lifted
By the shirt's arrival with the bearer of glad tidings.
As the scent of Joseph's shirt drew near
ولمand did not أرَI see مثلthe like of مِيلكyour kohl-stick وهوthough it is نِقسٌink
تغشّىcovered ناظريmy eyes ببياضwith the whiteness of نُورِlight
And I have never seen the like of your kohl-stick, though it is ink,
I've never seen anyone so inclined
That veiled my eyes in the whiteness of light.
My eyes dazzled by your light so pure
وكانand would have been الفوزtriumph لوif بُشِّرتI were given glad tidings فيهin it
بأنكthat you زائريmy visitor أوor مستزيريone inviting me to visit
And triumph would have been mine, had I been told in it
Had I but known you were my visitor
That you would visit me, or invite me to visit you,
Good fortune would have smiled on me

تُضَمُّare pressed بهin it النحورُthe bosoms إلىto النحورِthe bosoms
For a secluded meeting and the intimacy of union,
For a gathering of intimacy and charm
In which bosoms are pressed to bosoms.
Where souls embrace from shore to shore

كتابيmy letter بالأنينwith moaning وبالزفيرِand with sighing
I wrote to you while tears erased
I wrote, though tears blotted out my words
My letter, amid moaning and sighs.
My letter sighed and moaned to you
ويشهدُand bears witness ليfor me علىto ماwhat فيin ضميريmy heart
سطورُthe lines of الدمعtears ماwhat lies بينbetween السطورِthe lines
And bearing witness for me to what is in my heart
What's in my heart is witnessed to
Are the lines of tears between the lines.
By teardrops between line and line

صدورthe openings of الكتبthe letters عمّاabout what فيin الضميرِthe heart
We concealed what was in us, until there was revealed
We've kept our secret till books revealed
By the letters' openings what lay within the heart.
What lay inside our inmost souls
