You began with reproach, a branch without a root,

and did not await my excuse, so as to desist from blaming me.

So do not rush to reproach: it is blameworthy

for one friend to hurry to reproach another.

And every harsh reproach, with its constricted

pathways, drives one toward easy lies.

Daily mutual reproach is no good,

nor is fault-finding fitting in earnest or in jest.

Our mutual reproach demeans us; yet

mutual reproach among the wise is part of wisdom at its fullest.

And swords may obey even when rusty,

nor is a sword offered for polishing at every moment.

And it is said a garment is worn out before its time

by subjecting it to washing before it is soiled.

Our differences over visits are a small matter,

if we agree on a common form of brotherhood.

If you ask me, "Where is your honoring of our rights?"

my answer is, "Where is your practice of generosity?"

And you ask me the difference between keeping in touch

and estrangement—to establish what is true and what is stalling.

A young man's loyal regard in absence and his faithfulness

are what distinguish severance from union.

He is not absent who is away yet keeps faith,

nor is he a visitor who visits while still in the saddle.

My standing on my head to fulfill my brothers' due

is too little for them—what, then, of standing on my feet?

So if fever afflicts your body for an hour,

your lofty standing with us is in no way impaired.

And you are not alone in being ill; rather,

the souls of the discerning are in a state of sickness.

Nor is your hoped-for recovery your recovery alone,

but the recovery of the sciences from ignorance.

You have announced, Abu Bakr, a night of parting,

and you are but the sun, drawing near its setting.

If you are gone, I shall surely feel a desolation

that bewilders—if words can make up for isolation.

And grant that I strive to repay words with words:

who, then, can repay deeds with deeds on my behalf?
