إذاwhen راحwent forth at evening مشهورُrenowned المحاسنِcharms أوor غَداwent forth in the morning
إذا راح مشهورُ المحاسنِ أو غَدا
يلينsoftens لهfor him لحظُthe gaze العيونِthe eyes الغوامِزِwinking
يلين له لحظُ العيونِ الغوامِزِ
When he whose charms are famed goes forth at evening or morning,
When the famous beauty departs or leaves at dawn
the gaze of winking eyes softens for him.
His glance softens the eyes of the flirtatious ladies
فمنso whoever لمdid not تفزwin عيناهhis two eyes منهfrom him بنظرةٍwith a glance
فمن لم تفز عيناه منه بنظرةٍ
فليسthen he is not بخيرٍany good فيin الحياةlife بفائزِa winner
فليس بخيرٍ في الحياة بفائزِ
So whoever's eyes have not won a glance from him
Whoever's eyes have not been dazzled by his gaze
has won no good in life.
Is not fortunate nor a winner in life
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle انتضىunsheathed سيفَthe sword الملاحةbeauty طرفُهُhis gaze
إذا ما انتضى سيفَ الملاحة طرفُهُ
ونادىand called to قلوبَthe hearts of الناسpeople هلis there منany مُبارِزِchallenger
ونادى قلوبَ الناس هل من مُبارِزِ
When his gaze unsheathes the sword of beauty,
When the sword of gallantry unsheathes its blade
and calls to people's hearts, 'Is there a challenger?'
And calls out to people's hearts: who will duel?
عجزتُI was powerless وألقىand offered السلمَsubmission قلبيmy heart لطرفِهِto his gaze
عجزتُ وألقى السلمَ قلبي لطرفِهِ
علىdespite أنهthe fact that it عنagainst غيرهanyone other than him غيرnot عاجِزِpowerless
على أنه عن غيره غير عاجِزِ
I am powerless, and my heart surrenders to his gaze,
I am helpless, so I surrender my heart to its edge
though it is not powerless against anyone else.
For it is powerless against any other but him
