قد طوينا عهد الرجاء بياسِ
بعدماafter غرَّنيdeceived me بكمabout you وسواسيmy inner whisperings
بعدما غرَّني بكم وسواسي
We have folded away the days of hope in despair,
We have folded the covenant of hope in despair
after my inner whisperings deceived me about you.
After your delusions and obsessions deceived me
خدعتنيdeceived me أبوَّةٌpaternal lineage لكof yours سارتbecame widely known
خدعتني أبوَّةٌ لك سارت
وظننتُand I thought الفروعَthe branches كالآساسlike the foundations
وظننتُ الفروعَ كالآساس
Your far-famed paternal lineage deceived me,
A false fatherhood for you passed by
and I thought the branches were like their foundations.
And I thought the branches were like the root
فرجوناso we hoped بكin you القياسَthe analogy ولكنand yet
فرجونا بك القياسَ ولكن
فسدwas flawed النسجُthe weaving منbecause of فسادfaultiness القياسِthe measure
فسد النسجُ من فساد القياسِ
So we hoped the analogy would hold in you, and yet
We hoped in you for fairness, but
the weaving was flawed because the measure was flawed.
The fabric was ruined by the corruption of fairness
ماnot توهمتُI imagined أنَّthat معدنَa mine تبرٍraw gold
ما توهمتُ أنَّ معدنَ تبرٍ
كائنٌcoming into being منهfrom it بُرَّةa nose-ring منof نحاسcopper
كائنٌ منه بُرَّة من نحاس
I never imagined that a mine of raw gold
I did not imagine that the essence of pure gold
could yield a copper nose-ring.
Could produce an ingot of copper
إنif نسبناwe ascribed إلىto الكرامthe noble سجاياtraits
إن نسبنا إلى الكرام سجايا
كyour (suffix) رَقَعناwe patched الحريرَthe silk بالكِرباسwith coarse cotton cloth
ك رَقَعنا الحريرَ بالكِرباس
If we ascribed to noble men traits
If we attributed to the generous their flaws
of yours, we would be patching silk with coarse cotton cloth.
We would patch silk with coarse fabric
قدindeed غرسناwe planted لكfor you المَلامةreproach فيin الأنthe souls (first fragment)
قد غرسنا لك المَلامة في الأن
فُسcompletion of 'souls' إذsince حُلتَyou turned away عنfrom كريمnoble الغِراسِthe planted stock
فُس إذ حُلتَ عن كريم الغِراسِ
We have planted reproach for you in people's
We planted blame in the soul when you slipped away
souls, since you turned away from noble stock.
From the noble nurturing
إنif تناسيتَyou feigned forgetfulness أوor نسيتَyou forgot فلاthen no عُذexcuse (first fragment)
إن تناسيتَ أو نسيتَ فلا عُذ
رcompletion of 'excuse' فإنَّfor indeed المُهتمَّthe one who cares ليسis not بناسِat all forgetful
ر فإنَّ المُهتمَّ ليس بناسِ
If you feigned forgetfulness or forgot, there is no
If you forget or neglect, no apology,
excuse, for one who cares does not forget.
For the anxious is not forgetful
