We complained to one another through glances of the eyelids,

That we might remain in our safeguarded love.

    تَجمَّلنا لتكذيب الظنونِ

    When we feared suspicions, we guarded against them;

We assumed composure to belie those suspicions.

We counter people's suspicions with aloofness,

    So doubts challenge certainty.

And we trusted only glances as messengers,

For fear of someone envious or treacherous.

Nor were we [unclear word], when he kept his distance,

To trust the left hand with the right.

In my excessive concern, I almost shield

My beloved from the hints of suspicion.

I see in my love for you many forms of reason,

While people's love is a kind of madness.

So whoever seeks help by divulging it

Is no trustworthy guardian of lovers.

Is it fitting, beloved, that you should see me

Offering you sincere affection, while you spurn me?

So, O you who were fashioned from fragrance and light,

While all people are made of water and clay:

    God forbid that these qualities

And this beauty should come from lowly fluid!

But you are made of pure light,

And fragrance blended with flowing water.

So if you are a well-formed human like us,

Then what is the light upon this brow?

So your face is adorned with beauty's embroidery,

And your body is clothed in a robe of softness.

As though the swaying of its flanks

Were a breeze playing with the branches.

O gazelle of the wild, patience has overcome my heart,

Perhaps I may choose you, and you choose me.

So if we have both complained to each other,

Then why do I guard against you, and you against me?
