    كأنَّهُمُ عطشوا فارتَوَوا

    The thirsty-eyed ones squeezed the slender forms;

    As though they had thirsted and then drunk their fill.

    They gloried in the varied charms of their beauty,

    And rose upon their legs, then stood upright.

    وقد حيرونا بما قد حَوَوا

    They possessed allure, and they possessed wit;

    And indeed, they bewildered us with what they possessed.

    ولو أنصفوا في الهوى ما زَوَوا

    They withheld their intimacy from their lovers;

    And had they been fair in love, they would not have withheld it.

    Whenever they intended to cut us off, they held out hope,

    To deceive us with what they had intended.

    And how often they turned away after they had turned away!

    And how often they fled after they had stayed!

    You see them hovering around the towers,

    Standing, they recounted how intensely they had loved.
