غصصُchoking pangs الفراقِparting مُزِجنَwere mingled بالحسَراتِwith regrets
وفراقand parting مَنthe one whom أهوىI love فراقparting حياتيmy life
The choking pangs of parting were mingled with regrets.
The pangs of separation are mixed with regrets,
And parting from the one I love is parting from my life.
And parting with the one I love is like parting with life.
عجبٌa wonder لمَنfor one who يبقىlives on لبُعدbecause of the distance of حبيبهhis beloved
أنthat لاnot يموتَhe dies بكثرةfrom the multitude of الزفراتِsighs
It is a wonder, for one who lives on far from his beloved,
It is surprising that one who is far from their beloved,
That he does not die from so many sighs.
Does not die from excessive sighs.
موتthe death of البريَّةhumankind عندat وقتthe time of وفاتِهاits passing
والعاشقونand the lovers لهمfor them فنونُvarieties of مماتِdeath
Humankind dies at the hour of its passing,
Animals die at their appointed time,
But lovers have many forms of death.
While lovers have ingenious ways of dying.
مَنwhoever لمhas not يَذُقtasted طَعمthe taste of الصبابةardent longing والهوىand love
ويكونand become صباًlovesick عُدَّis counted فيamong الأمواتِthe dead
Whoever has not tasted the savor of yearning and love,
Whoever has not tasted the flavor of youth and passion,
Nor become lovesick, is counted among the dead.
And been a youth, is counted among the dead.
