O you, upon whose cheeks
O you whose cheeks
are charming sprouts of every kind,
Are adorned with every delicate blossom
للشكلfor the form فيكin you لطائفٌsubtle charms
للشكل فيك لطائفٌ
يلعَبنَthey play بالفِطَنwith wits اللطيفَهْsubtle
يلعَبنَ بالفِطَن اللطيفَهْ
In you, form has subtle charms
Your beauty is full of grace
that toy with subtle wits.
That captivates the subtle wit
طرَّزنَthey embroidered منكof you محاسناًbeauties
طرَّزنَ منك محاسناً
بطرازin a pattern of ألفاظٍwords ظريفَهْelegant
بطراز ألفاظٍ ظريفَهْ
They embroidered your beauties
They have embroidered in you charms
in a pattern of elegant words.
With the embroidery of charming words
ماnot آفةaffliction المحبوبthe beloved منfrom
ما آفة المحبوب من
كyou سوىexcept لواحظكyour glances الضعيفَهْlanguid
ك سوى لواحظك الضعيفَهْ
The beloved has no affliction from
The beloved's only fault
you except your languid glances.
Is your feeble glances
عاقبتُI punished قلبيmy heart فيfor هواlove for
عاقبتُ قلبي في هوا
كَyou عقابَthe punishment of مَنone who قَتَلkilled الخليفَهْthe caliph
كَ عقابَ مَن قَتَل الخليفَهْ
I punished my heart for loving
I have punished my heart for loving you
you as one who killed the caliph is punished.
As one who murdered the Caliph is punished
