ياO مُنيتيmy desire لِمwhy حجبتَyou were veiled عنfrom بصريmy sight
ماwhat كانwas يُخشىto be feared عليكfor you منfrom نظريmy gaze
O my desire, why were you veiled from my sight?
Oh my bliss, why have you concealed yourself from my sight?
What was there to fear for you from my gaze?
There was no fear for you from my gaze,
هلquestion marker كانwas فيin نظرةٍa glance أعيشI live بهاby it
ياO سُؤلَdesire قلبيmy heart عليكto you منany ضَرَرِharm
Was there, in a glance by which I live,
Was there any harm for you in a glance in which I live?
O my heart's desire, any harm to you?
Oh torment of my heart, what injury is there for you from me?
قرَّةdelight عينيmy eye متىwhen تعللهits consolation
منكfrom you فقلبيfor my heart فيin أعظمgreatest الحَذَرِdread
O delight of my eye, when will its solace come
Delight of my eye, when will you excuse
From you? For my heart is in the greatest dread.
My heart from you, for it is in great caution.
لاmay not كانexist مَنwhoever يصنعmakes السُّتورthe veils فكمfor how many
يُحجَبis hidden تحتbeneath الستورthe veils منof قَمَرِa moon
May whoever makes veils be no more—for how many
It is not he who makes the veils, but how many
Moons lie hidden beneath the veils!
Moons are concealed beneath the veil.
ياOh طِيبَsweetness أيّامِناour days التيthat سلفتwent by

Oh, the sweetness of our days gone by!
Oh beautiful days of ours that have passed,
How sweet was the love of childhood!
Nothing was sweeter than the love of childhood.
