ياO حَسَناًHasan (handsome) اسمهhis name لهfor him صفةٌa description
يا حَسَناً اسمه له صفةٌ
بديعwondrous حُسنٍbeauty سَوّاهfashioned him خالِفُهُhis successor (as written)
بديع حُسنٍ سَوّاه خالِفُهُ
O Hasan, whose name describes him!
O beauty, his name suits his qualities
A marvel of beauty, fashioned by his successor.
Of exquisite beauty made perfect by its opposite
للغصنfor the bough منfrom قَدِّهhis stature شمائلُهits graces
للغصن من قَدِّه شمائلُه
للظبيfor the gazelle منfrom جيدهhis neck سَوالفُهُthe sides of its neck
للظبي من جيده سَوالفُهُ
The bough draws its graces from his stature;
Like the graceful branches to the tree trunk
The gazelle draws its neck's contours from his neck.
And the neck to the gazelle
يستقبحhe deems ugly الظلمَinjustice وهوwhile he فاعلُهits perpetrator
يستقبح الظلمَ وهو فاعلُه
وينكرand he denies الحقَّthe truth وهوwhile he عارفُهُone who knows it
وينكر الحقَّ وهو عارفُهُ
He finds injustice ugly, yet he commits it;
He hates injustice though he is its maker
And he denies the truth, though he knows it.
And denies the truth though knowing it
تُهديoffer إليَّto me الهوىpassion رَوادفُهhis haunches
تُهدي إليَّ الهوى رَوادفُه
إذاwhen تهادَتsway gently بهwith him رَوادفُهُhis haunches
إذا تهادَت به رَوادفُهُ
His haunches bring me passion
Passion leads me to its haunts
When his haunches sway gently with him.
When it comes accompanied by its mates
وعيشِهby his life ماnot حسدتُI envied غيرَother than فتىًa young man
وعيشِه ما حسدتُ غيرَ فتىً
يُبلىis afflicted فيهوىthen he loves منone who لاdoes not يخالفُهُoppose him
يُبلى فيهوى من لا يخالفُهُ
By his life, I have envied none but a young man
I envy none their life but the youth
Who is afflicted, then loves one who does not resist him.
Who is consumed by a love none can rival
