    O absent one, whose remembrance is present in my heart,

    You have borne my absence, but I cannot bear yours.

    An apology may be fitting from one who has done wrong,

    But I have done no wrong—so tell me how I should apologize.

    وأيُّ شَيءٍ إذا عاقبتَ يُغتَفَرُ

    Rather, a fault is forgiven before punishment for it;

    And what can be forgiven once you have punished?

    And with what can I lead my heart away from you,

    When its two guides to you are hearing and sight?

    فالقلب يرعاك إن لم يرعك النظرُ

    Be wherever you wish, near or far;

    For my heart watches over you, even if my gaze does not.

    My heart sang as remembrance of you dawned upon it,

    But my gaze is in need of seeing you.
