لا تعشقنَّ ابنَ الربيع فإنه
عندwhen التجردbeing stripped bare آيةُa wonder الآياتِthe wonders
عند التجرد آيةُ الآياتِ
Never fall in love with Ibn al-Rabīʿ, for he,
Do not fall in love with the son of spring, for he
when stripped bare, is a wonder of wonders.
When stripped bare, is the greatest of signs
وجهa face كعبّادانlike ʿAbbādān ليسthere is not وراءهbeyond it
وجه كعبّادان ليس وراءه
لمحبّهfor his lover شيئاًanything سوىexcept الخشباتِthe pieces of wood
لمحبّه شيئاً سوى الخشباتِ
A face like ʿAbbādān—beyond it there is
A face like idols has naught behind it
nothing for his lover but pieces of wood.
