فؤاديmy heart علىupon عهدthe pledge of الحبيبthe beloved حبيسُcaptive
وبينand between ضلوعيmy ribs للحنينof yearning رسيسُa lingering trace
My heart is captive to the beloved's pledge.
My heart is captive to the pledge of my beloved
And between my ribs lingers a trace of yearning.
And longing resides between my ribs
فإنand if توحشbring estrangement الأيامthe days بينيbetween me وبينهand him
فماthen no ليfor me سوىexcept شوقيmy longing إليهfor him أنيسُa companion
And if the days bring estrangement between me and him,
If the days become desolate between me and him
Then I have no companion but my longing for him.
Then my yearning for him is my only companion
يؤانسنيkeeps me company ذكراهthe memory of him فيin كلِّevery خلوةٍsolitude
بلىyes indeed منهfrom him إنif غابis absent الجليسthe companion جليسُa companion
His memory keeps me company in every solitude.
The memory of him comforts me in every seclusion
Yes—if the companion is absent, his memory remains a companion.
Indeed, from him - if the companion is absent - is a companion
عجبتُI marvel لمنat whoever يكفىkeeps away النفوسsouls عنfrom الهوىlove
وقَدرُand the worth of الهوىlove عندin the eyes of النفيسthe noble person نفيسُprecious
I marvel at whoever keeps souls from love,
I wonder at those who abstain their souls from passion
And love's worth is precious to the noble.
Yet the worth of passion to the noble soul is precious
