أخيmy brother لاdo not تؤاخذنيhold me to blame وإنand even if كانwas ليfor me ذنبُa fault
فليسfor there is no علىupon العشاقlovers فيin فعلهمtheir conduct عتبُreproach
My brother, do not blame me, even if I am at fault.
My brother, do not blame me, though I am at fault,
For lovers incur no reproach for what they do.
For lovers cannot be reproached for their deeds.
وعدتُكI promised you وعداًa promise عاقنيhindered me عنهfrom it عائقan obstacle
وللناسand people have أسبابcircumstances لهاbecause of them يُقلَبُis turned القلبُthe heart
I made you a promise, but an obstacle kept me from it.
I made you a promise I was prevented from keeping,
And people have circumstances by which the heart is turned.
For people have reasons that make the heart fickle.
لقدindeed فاتنيeluded me كلُّall المنىwishes حينwhen فاتنيeluded me
مشاهدُكthe sights of you الحسنىbeautiful ومنطقُكand your speech العذبُsweet
All my wishes eluded me when I lost
All my wishes were lost when I lost
the lovely sights of you and your sweet speech.
Seeing your beautiful face and hearing your sweet talk.
لئنif indeed كانwas ليfor me خلa friend عليكover you مقدَّماًgiven precedence
إذاwhen ذُكِرwere mentioned الخلّانُintimate friends عنديَin my presence والصحبُand companions
If I ever had a friend I preferred to you,
If I was remiss with you in the past,
when intimate friends and companions were mentioned before me,
When boon companions are mentioned, who is without fault?
I would surely have violated توحيديmy monotheism وعفتand I would have spurned أئمتيmy imams
وملتُand I would have turned الىto الجِبتِthe false deity المضللmisleading والنصبِand the idol-stones
I would have violated my monotheism and spurned my imams,
I would contradict my faith and disobey my imams,
and turned to the deluding false deity and the idol-stones.
And incline to the misguided and hypocritical cult,
ولولاand were it not for التصابيamorous dalliance كانwould have been فيin الحسنbeauty مذهبيmy path
فلاحاًprosperity ولكنbut ليسdoes not يفلحprosper منwhoever يصبوyields to desire
Were it not for amorous dalliance, my path in beauty would have been
Were it not for being overpowered by devotion,
prosperity; but whoever yields to desire does not prosper.
Otherwise my creed would be for the fair, but the fair do not prosper.
تحيَّرتُI was bewildered فيover تركِleaving الحبيبthe beloved وترككمand leaving you
ففيfor in تركهleaving him لهوfrivolity وفيand in ترككمleaving you ذنبُa sin
I was bewildered between leaving my beloved and leaving you;
I was confused whether to leave the beloved or leave you,
for leaving him is frivolity, while leaving you is a sin.
For in leaving him there is frivolity, and in leaving you there is guilt.
وقالand said فؤاديmy heart ليسdoes not يعذركexcuse you الإخاbrotherhood
علىfor جفوةٍestrangement إذsince ليسdoes not يعذركexcuse you الحِبُّthe beloved
And my heart said: "Brotherhood does not excuse you
My heart said to me, love does not excuse you
for estrangement, since your beloved does not excuse you either."
For coldness, since love does not excuse you.
ولماand when رأيتُI saw القلبَthe heart سهَّلmade light of سخطكمyour anger
ليرضىso that it might be pleased الهوىpassion أيقنتُI became certain أنthat الهوىpassion صعبُdifficult
When I saw that the heart made light of your anger
When I saw the heart made light of your anger
so that passion might be pleased, I knew that passion was hard.
To please passion, I knew passion is unyielding.
ولمّاand when خشيتI feared الموتَdeath كذبتI broke وعدَكمthe promise to you
فقولواso say أكانwas it الموتُdeath خيراًbetter أمor الكذْبُlying
And when I feared death, I broke my promise to you;
When I feared death I broke my promise to you,
so tell me: was death better, or lying?
So say, is death or lying more evil?
ولمand never تتغالبcontended شهوةٌlust ومُرُوَّةٌand honor
فيفترقاand then parted إلاexcept وللشهوةand lust has الغلبُthe victory
Never have lust and honor contended
No desire or dignity ever clashed
and parted without lust gaining the victory.
Without desire winning in the end.
ولمand not يثننيturn me aside التقصيرneglect عنكمfrom you وإنماbut rather

ثنىbent عزمتيmy resolve لماwhen انثنىbent الغُصُنُthe branch الرطبُsupple
It was not neglect that turned me from you; rather,
Lassitude did not stop me from you, but
my resolve was bent when the supple branch bent.
My resolve faltered when the soft branch bent.
لقدindeed ذُبتُI melted إذwhen أبدىhe revealed إليَّto me مضاحكاًsmiling teeth
كماas ذابmelted شيطانٌa devil تقضswoop down لهupon him شهبُshooting stars
I melted when he revealed his smiling teeth to me,
I melted when he smiled at me,
as a devil melts when shooting stars swoop upon him.
Like a shooting star melting when it falls.

فذاكfor that نِهابٌmutual pillage فيin الوصالunion وذاand this نَهبُplunder
The more he kissed, the more bashful I became;
The more he kissed, the more modest I became,
for that is mutual pillage in union, and this is plunder.
One is ravishment in union, the other is plunder.
ويبذلand he offers ليto me بشراًcheerfulness وأُعطيهand I give him غيرهsomething other than it
فبعضfor some المنىdesires عطبٌruin وبعضand some المنىdesires عصبُbinding
He offers me cheerfulness, and I give him something else;
He gives me a cheerful glance and I give him another,
for some desires bring ruin, and some bind.
Some of the bounty is defective, some of the bounty is fresh.
ومالand he inclined إلىtoward سخفfrivolity فملتُso I inclined ولمand not أكنI was
سخيفاًfrivolous ولكنbut كلُّevery شيءٍthing لهfor it طبُّa remedy
He inclined to frivolity, and so did I, though I was not
He inclined to frivolity, so I inclined, though I am not
frivolous; but everything has its remedy.
Frivolous, for everything has its own nature.

ودارتand turned رحىthe millstone الكذّانsoft rock إذwhen رُكِّبwas fitted القطبُthe spindle
So knots were untied when his obstinacy dissolved,
The knots came undone when their knitter unraveled,
and the millstone of soft rock turned when the spindle was fitted.
And the millstones turned when the pole was erected.

And I gained something between earnestness and play—
I flew into something between jest and earnest,
and oh, how often earnestness begins with play!
And who knows how much earnestness begins in jest.

Had I consulted you, you would not have advised
If only I had consulted you, you would not have counseled
me to be far from my beloved when closeness was possible.
Against the intimacy of habit when nearness was possible.

Were I not hoping for your approval, I would not have grown accustomed
Were it not for my hoping for your approval, I would not have cared
to uncovering matters whose wilderness held veils.
To reveal matters that were veiled in their circles.

It is reproach I fear: whoever once found
I fear that whoever was once wounded
reproach painful feels no pain from blows.
Will one day be hurt again by tenderness.

كماas تستهبُّrise up الخيلhorses منfrom بعدafter ماthat تكبوthey stumble
Friends may prove true after a stumble,
Loyal friends may redeem themselves after a slip,
as horses rise again after they stumble.
As horses recover their footing after stumbling.

وأيand what حسامkeen sword فيat الأحايينtimes لاdoes not ينبوglance off
What noble steed has never made a misstep,
What thoroughbred is there that never falters?
and what keen sword does not sometimes glance off?
What sword in the thick of battle does not strike helter-skelter?

لهhe has الكرمgenerosity المأثورrenowned والخلقand character الرحبmagnanimous
Do you think treachery could circle about me against a friend
You see me shun one whose nobility and graciousness
whose generosity is renowned and whose character is magnanimous?
Are legendary, and whose nature is generous.
فإنand if قلتyou say هلis it يُجفَىshunned الصديقa friend لأمردfor a beardless young man
فلاthen no عجبwonder إذsince كانwas يعصىdisobeyed بهfor his sake الربُّthe Lord
If you ask, "Is a friend shunned for a beardless young man?"
If you say, can a friend be spurned for some folly?
it is no wonder, since the Lord is disobeyed for his sake.
It is no wonder, when even the Lord is disobeyed.
فلاso do not تُدْنِسَنْever stain أخلاقَكyour virtues الغرَّradiant بالقلىwith hatred
فحيثfor where يكونthere is الجورinjustice لاnot يحمدis praised الخصبُfertility
So do not stain your radiant virtues with hatred;
Do not tarnish your sublime character with petty wrongs,
for where injustice dwells, fertility earns no praise.
For where there is injustice, bounty is not praised.

وماand not الرعيgrazing إلاexcept حيثwhere يستعذبis found sweet العشبُthe grass

Companionship is found only where approval is sought,
There is no companionship except where approval is sought,
and grazing only where the grass is found sweet.
No pasturage except where the grass is sweet.

And what is my concern? Sincerity in affection and passion.
What business have I with sincere love and passion
Eating is no concern of mine there, nor is drinking.
While I am here, neither eating nor drinking?

I do not love bounty when it comes from the wrong quarter,
I do not love superiority without merit,
just as the sun is not loved if it rises in the west.
As the sun is not loved rising in the west.

So take these pearl-like sayings, strung
With gaps between into which holes can creep.
into necklaces, though no hole has pierced them.

You will remember my words at every novelty,
Longingly at the abode, when the paths meander.
as you recall al-Dari when cawing is found novel.
