إذ أنت متَّبعٌ والشرط دينارُ
May rain bless a bygone age—how beautiful it was!
A drink for times past, how good they were,
When you were sought after, and the stipulated fee was a dinar.
When you were compliant and virtue was but a dinar.

وللربيعand for spring علىupon خديكyour two cheeks أنوارُblossoms
وللربيع على خديك أنوارُ
In the days when the sides of your face were polished smooth,
The days your face whose cheeks shone bright,
And spring had blossoms upon your cheeks.
And on your cheeks spring had cast its light.

كماjust as يُسوَّدُis blackened بعدafter الميتthe deceased الدارُthe house
كما يُسوَّدُ بعد الميت الدارُ
Its death-hour came, so its cheek turned black,
His death has come and darkened his cheek
Just as the house is blackened after someone dies.
As the home is darkened when death does reek.
