طباعَكَyour nature فالزَمهاso keep to it وخلِّand leave aside التكلُّفاaffectation
فإنfor indeed الذيthat which غطيتهyou covered it قدalready تكشَّفاhas become exposed
Keep to your nature, and abandon affectation.
Your nature, so accept it and abandon affectation
For what you covered has now been laid bare.
For what you have concealed has now been revealed
فلِمso why تتعاطىdo you undertake ماwhat تعوَّدتَyou are accustomed to ضدَّهits opposite
إذاif كنتَyou are خوّاناًhabitually treacherous فِلمthen why تدَّعيdo you claim الوَفاfidelity
Why then attempt what is contrary to your accustomed ways?
Why do you pretend what you're accustomed against
If you are habitually treacherous, why claim fidelity?
If you were sincere, why claim loyalty?
أتذكرdo you remember قوليmy saying إننيindeed I منكof you خائفٌafraid
ألستdo you not تخافfear اللهGod إنif كنتَyou are منصِفاjust
Do you remember my saying that I am afraid of you?
Remember my saying, I fear you
Do you not fear God, if you are just?
Don't you fear God, if you were equitable?
غدرتَyou acted treacherously ولمand were not تُغدَرtreated treacherously وخُنتَand you betrayed ولمand were not تُخَنbetrayed
ومرَّرتand you embittered ماwhat احلولىgrew sweet وكدَّرتَand you muddied ماwhat صفاwas clear
You were treacherous without suffering treachery, and faithless without suffering faithlessness.
You betrayed while not being betrayed, and cheated while not being cheated
And you embittered what grew sweet, and muddied what was clear.
And passed on the worries and muddied what was clear
فماso not هيit إلاexcept أنto أعيشI live منغَّصاًembittered
لنقضكbecause of your breaking عهديmy covenant أوor أموتَI die تأسُّفاin sorrow
There is nothing for me but to live embittered,
So it’s just me living worried
By your breaking my covenant—or die of sorrow.
For your breaking of my pact, or me dying in regret
فلمfor not يتهنَّأenjoyed بالوصالin union مروَّعٌone terrified

بغدرٍby betrayal ولاand no عيشlife لمنfor one who كانwas مُدنَفاwasted by love
For union gives no joy to one terrified
No frightened one enjoys union
By betrayal, nor is there life for the lovesick.
with betrayal, nor life for one smeared
إذاif خفتُI feared أمراًsomething ثمthen أبصرتُI saw صاحبيmy companion

If I fear something, then see my companion
When I fear something then see my companion
Keeping secrets from me, I grow more afraid of him.
Concealing from me, I increase in worry from him
أأحمدُO Ahmad لِمwhy تخلِفdo you break your word فإنكfor indeed you خائفٌare afraid
ولنand will not يُعذرbe excused الغدّارُthe traitor إلاexcept ليُخلِفاso he may break his word
O Ahmad, why do you break your word, since you are afraid?
Ahmad why do default when you are worried
And a traitor will only be excused so he may break his word.
The betrayer is excused only to default
حبيبيmy beloved أماdid you not استحييتَyou felt ashamed منّيbefore me تخوننيyou betray me
وتَزويand you withhold ثمارَthe fruits of الوصلunion عنيfrom me لتُقطفاso they may be plucked
My beloved, have you no shame before me, betraying me
My love, are you not ashamed of me, to betray me
And withholding the fruits of union from me so they may be plucked?
And deprive me of the fruits of union to pluck?
ولِمand why تقبلdo you accept العذرَthe excuse الذيwhich بانَbecame apparent زَيفُهits falseness
وهلand is مستجادٌdeemed good درهمٌa dirham قدalready تزيَّفاproved counterfeit
And why accept the excuse whose falseness is clear?
Why accept an excuse whose falsehood is clear
And is a dirham that has proved counterfeit deemed sound?
Can counterfeit money be praised?
تحيَّرتI am bewildered لاnot أدريI know أأرضىshould I be content بماwith what أرىI see
فأكمدand so I pine أمor أجفوI shun الحبيبthe beloved فأتلَفاand so I perish
I am bewildered: I do not know whether to accept what I see,
I’m confused, unsure whether to accept what I see
And pine in grief, or shun the beloved and perish?
And suppress myself, or turn away my beloved and perish
فليfor I have نفسthe soul of حرٍّa free man لاnot يطيقcan bear خيانةًbetrayal
وليand I have قلبthe heart of صبٍّa lovesick lover ليسis not يقوىstrong enough علىfor الجفاestrangement
For I have a free man's soul, which cannot bear betrayal,
I have a free soul that can't bear betrayal
And a lovesick lover's heart, too weak to bear estrangement.
And I have a firm heart that can't handle rejection
ففيfor in الغدرtreachery تنغيصٌmisery وفيand in الهجرseparation محنةٌan ordeal
وقدand indeed نالنيhas befallen me منكfrom you الغِدَارُtreachery مضعَّفاredoubled
For treachery brings misery, and separation is an ordeal,
In betrayal there is vexation, and in separation tribulation
And I have suffered treachery from you, redoubled.
And the betrayer has doubled that on me

We thought well of you because of your leaning
We thought well of you for your inclination
Toward us, but that expectation proved false.
Toward us, but that expectation defaulted
إذاif غابvanished ماءُthe sap of الغُصنِthe bough عنfrom روضةthe garden of المنىhopes

فحقّthen it is fitting لأغصانfor the boughs of المنىhopes أنto تُقَصَّفاbe snapped apart
If the bough's sap vanishes from the garden of hopes,
If the water of the branch is absent from the meadow of wishes
Then it is fitting that the boughs of hope be snapped apart.
It’s right for the meadow’s branches to be picked
إذاif رحلdeparts الإنصافfairness عنfrom عرصةthe courtyard of الهوىpassion
فماthen no للرضاfor contentment عذرٌexcuse بأنfor it to يتخلَّفاremain behind
If fairness departs from the courtyard of passion,
If integrity leaves the field of love
Then contentment has no excuse to remain behind.
There is no excuse for acceptance to lag
وماand how أوحشdesolate الإلفينthe two lovers حنَّاthey both yearned
اذاwhen افترقاthey both parted منfrom بعدafter ماthat قدalready تألفاthey both grew close
And how desolate the two lovers are, both yearning,
How lonesome for friends when they part
When they part after having grown close.
After they had become acquainted

You were indeed a fine beloved to me, treating me kindly,
You were good to me, caring for me
And more merciful and tender to me than my parents.
More than my parents, and more compassionate

How lovely was our intimacy and conversation
On nights when time favored us with union.
On nights when fate allowed us union

And that union, in its sweetness, was no mere union,
That union was not union, for its goodness
But a flash of lightning that snatched my mind away.
But a flash that seized my mind

You turned to me in tenderness, until it was as though
You were affectionate, as if you followed
You flowed along the soul's course—nay, you were subtler still.
The course of the soul, rather you were more gentle

So if you take another in my place, then I
If you take another in my place, then I
Have exchanged joy for anguished longing.
Have changed after joy into yearning

Farewell to the world if I do not find in it
Peace be upon the world, if I do not find
A loving beloved, fair in his affection.
A loving, sincere friend with fairness
