فراقكseparation from you فيهin it حسرتيmy sorrow وتنغّصيand my distress
ولوand if عُدتَyou returned عادتwould return لذتيmy delight وسروريand my joy
In parting from you lie my sorrow and distress.
Your absence causes my sorrow and grief
And if you returned, my delight and joy would return.
And if you returned, my joy and bliss would come back
بحقِّby the right of الإشاراتthe gestures التيthat كُنَّwere بينناbetween us
أتذكرهاdo you remember them? أمor أنتَyou غيرnot ذَكُورone who remembers
By the gestures that passed between us,
By the truth of the signs that were between us
Do you remember them, or are you forgetful?
Do you remember or have you become unmindful?
فمنfor from عينكyour eye النجلاءwide كانتwas بليتيmy affliction
فويلاهso, woe to me! منfrom غنجٍcoquetry بهاin it وفتورِand languor
For from your wide eye came my affliction.
From your bright eyes came my affliction
So, woe to me for its coquetry and languor!
Woe to the languor and indifference in them
تفرَّقتِscattered اللذّاتpleasures عنّيaway from me لفقدكمbecause of losing you
تفرُّقَthe scattering of أجنادٍtroops لفقدbecause of the loss of أميرa commander
Pleasures scattered away from me when I lost you,
Joys have deserted me due to your loss
As troops scatter when they lose a commander.
As armies scatter due to the loss of their commander
