I would ransom you, fickle yet affectionate one,

who tamed me with reassurance and intimidation.

    You find fault unfairly, and we suffer every misery;

then you are pleased, and we enjoy every comfort.

You wrong me at times, and at times act

in my favor, between indulgence and harsh rebuke.

My judgment is bewildered by your rule, unjust yet just,

and by your form, majestic yet delicate.

Unclothed, you are light; and yet

clothed, you are like one worn thin.

It was not by choice that I described you; rather,

    movements revealed the one described.

Movements bearing witness to hidden things,

so in them, what is covered is as though exposed.

You sway gracefully; the surge is a warning cry,

and you bend; your leaning is a frail thing's lean.

With your waist and your girdled hips, you evoke

the sting of longing in a feeble heart.

For the fullness of one and the slenderness of the other,

you are in two states: heavy and light.

You have a face like the full moon, yet free

    from waning into darkness, absence, or eclipse;

and a mouth like beauty's signet, adorned

with a sweet smile and graceful speech.

Life's delight was gathered in you, but

death's weaponry barred the way to it:

    well-aimed glances, like arrows,

from eyelids that cut like swords.
