I spend the night with a flame of love in my heart,

and love's fire tells you I am on the brink of perishing.

So, O you who, through your complexion's lovely shades, have become

like a red, bordered robe among the finest treasures,

with a smooth, radiant, rosy cheek,

where a rose gleams, returning whenever it is plucked.

Indeed, a tormenting longing for you has sorely pained me,

and I have become an ally of sorrow, yearning, and grief.

And you know what I hid from you, for

my love dwells within, and my heart is enamored of it.

So my tears betrayed what I had concealed,

nor did I make my complaint known to those who knew

my joy; so do not deny my love, lest you be afflicted

with some of what I have tasted of passion's pain.

And by God, I shall not forget you as long as a rider makes the pilgrimage,

and as long as a turtledove mourns upon the bough or calls.
