أستغفر اللَه إن اللَه غفّارُ

أستغفر اللَه إن اللَه غفّارُ

وما على عاشقٍ إثمٌ ولا عارُ

وما على عاشقٍ إثمٌ ولا عارُ

I seek God's forgiveness, for God is ever-forgiving.

I seek forgiveness from Allah, for Allah is Forgiving

And no sin or shame rests upon a lover.

No sin nor shame lies with a lover

بالنار خوَّفني قومٌ فقلتُ لهم

بالنار خوَّفني قومٌ فقلتُ لهم

النارُ ترحم مَن في قلبه النارُ

النارُ ترحم مَن في قلبه النارُ

Some people frightened me with fire, so I said to them:

With fire they threatened me, so I told them

Fire has mercy on whoever has fire in his heart.

The fire has mercy on those whose hearts hold fire's burn

ما ضاعف اللَهُ للعشّاق محنتهم

ما ضاعف اللَهُ للعشّاق محنتهم

إلا وليس على العشّاق أوزارُ

إلا وليس على العشّاق أوزارُ

God has never doubled the lovers' ordeal

Allah does not increase the lovers' sorrows

Except when no burdens of sin weigh upon the lovers.

Except that the lovers bear no burdens of sin

لولا الحياء من العذّال يسترنا

لولا الحياء من العذّال يسترنا

إذَن تهتَّك للعشّاق أستارُ

إذَن تهتَّك للعشّاق أستارُ

If shame before the reproachers did not conceal us,

If not for modesty before the chiders that covers us

Then the lovers' veils would be torn away.

Then the veils would be rent from the lovers

ومن بلائي أنّي عاشق لكُمُ

ومن بلائي أنّي عاشق لكُمُ

عبدٌ وحَوليَ كل الناس أحرارُ

عبدٌ وحَوليَ كل الناس أحرارُ

And part of my affliction is that I am in love with you—

And of my afflictions is that I love you

A slave, while all the people around me are free.

A slave, while all around me are freemen
