أرى ليَ في شهر الصيام إذا أتى
لياليَnights عَيّارٍa rogue وأيامand days عابِدِa worshipper
لياليَ عَيّارٍ وأيام عابِدِ
I see that, when the month of fasting comes, mine are
In the month of fasting, when it comes
A rogue’s nights and a worshipper’s days.
Are nights of revelry and days of devotion
أُناسٌpeople بعلّاتunder the pretexts of الصيامfasting تفرَّجواthey amused themselves
أُناسٌ بعلّات الصيام تفرَّجوا
وكانتand there were أُمورaffairs باعتلالunder the pretext of المساجِدِthe mosques
وكانت أُمور باعتلال المساجِدِ
People amused themselves under the pretexts of fasting,
People relax the duties of the fast
And there were affairs, with the mosques as a pretext.
While matters disrupt the tranquility of mosques
