رأيتُI saw الهلالَthe crescent moon ووجهَand the face of الحبيبthe beloved
فكاناso they were هلالَينِtwo crescents عندupon النَّظرْlooking
I saw the crescent moon and the beloved's face;
I saw the crescent moon and the face of my beloved
So, to my eyes, they were two crescents.
They seemed like two crescent moons to my eyes
فلمso did not أدرِI know منbecause of حيرتيmy bewilderment فيهماover the two of them
هلالَthe crescent of الدجىnight's darkness مِنfrom هلالthe crescent of البشرْhumankind
In my bewilderment over them, I could not tell
In my bewilderment over them
The crescent of night from the crescent of humankind.
I could not tell the moon of night from the moon of mortals
ولولاand were it not for التورُّدُthe rosy flush فيin الوجنتينthe two cheeks
وماand what راعنيstruck me منof سوادthe blackness of الشَّعَرْthe hair
Were it not for the rosy flush in the two cheeks,
Were it not for the blushing of his cheeks
And the blackness of the hair that struck me,
And the blackness of his hair that drew my attention
لكُنتُthen I would have been أظنthinking الهلالَthe crescent moon الحبيبَthe beloved
وكنتُand I would have been أظنthinking الحبيبthe beloved القمرْthe moon
I would have thought the crescent moon the beloved,
I would have thought my beloved was the crescent moon
And I would have thought the beloved the moon.
And I would have thought the crescent moon was my beloved
